If you are facing perennial weeds, you’ll want to cover the area they grow with sheets of newspaper that is topped with compost. This will starve out the weeds while protecting the rest of your garden. However, you may have to use chemicals if the weed problem is serious.

Snail & Slug Control

These two creatures will feast on the vegetables you grow, but only if you let them. You do not need to use chemicals, but rather start with a fully-weeded garden which you keep neat and tidy throughout the year. Then, you simply put open space between your vegetables so that the birds will do the work of removing the snails and slugs for you.

However, if you have a serious issue with snails and slugs, you may be forced to use chemicals, but only as a last resort.
